"On the 21st day of the month of September, in the early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced as such enemies often do in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places." Thus begins the Faustian tale of our innocent and impressionable hero, Seymour Krelbourn. Seymour was saved from the Skid Row Home for Boys when he was "just a little tyke" by Mr. Mushnik, the owner of the Skid Row Florists shop where Seymour is employed. His co-worker, Audrey, is the love of his life. So much so that he names his "strange and interesting" plant that he has cultivated after her: The Audrey II. When the plant is hungry, Seymour discovers the "secret formula" to keep it happy: Blood. After sudden successes for all three of the shop's inhabitants, the plant reveals itself to Seymour as a jive-talking, singing friend that needs more "food". Audrey's sadistic, dentist boyfriend provides the perfect solution to both the plant's and Seymour's dilemmas. Add a few winos, a couple of rich customers, some high-powered television and radio personalities and a trio of street-wise, harmonizing "urchins" to complete the picture. Little Shop of Horrors is a favorite of anyone who has hoped, dreamed and laughed. |
