Ninth Annual New Play Contest and Festival

Thank you to all the playwrights who submitted original works to us this year. It has been our biggest contest, and one of the hardest. We started with 486 plays. There were so many great submissions - it was hard to narrow it down to the nine winners and three honorable mentions!

Honorable Mention - Are You Popular by Alan Brody - Somerville, Massachusetts

  • One Act:
Rules for a Knife Fight by Matt Wexler - Minnetonka, Minnesota
Just My Luck by Nick Vigorito - Brooklyn, New York
Honorable Mention - Bedtime by Michael E. Wolfson - Valley Village, California

Thank you also to all of our readers and judges who spent considerable hours reading those 486 entries.

The Ninth Annual New Play Festival will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Lakeville Area Arts Center in Lakeville. The New Play Festival is a concert-style readings of winning full-length, ten-minute, musical and one act plays from our annual New Play Contest.

Discussions follow each of the readings, providing feedback and further development of the plays and their authors.

Scheduled times for each reading is as follows:

10:00 a.m. - 12 Steps to Happy Hour by Matt Wexler
10:30 - Blonde Giovanni by Rick Raasch
11:50 - Dancing About Architecture by John C. Davenport
12:15 p.m. - Just My Luck by Nick Vigorito
1:00 - Wrestling the Alligator by Sergei Burbank
3:30 - A Stake in the Cake by Justin Boyd
3:50 - Rules for a Knife Fight by Matt Wexler
4:15 - Esla and Frinz Go Partying by Jon Steinhagen

Due to time constraints of the day long festival, we do not have the ability to provide a staged reading of the winning musical.  Instead, in between readings we will be playing selected clips from the score.

Doors to the Lakeville Area Arts Center open at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome, there is no cost for attending the Ninth Annual New Play Festival.
